Board of Education Delays School Expansion Timeline

In January, County Executive Marc Elrich released a $4.23 billion Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) that reduced the school district’s construction budget by $100 million over six years. As a result, MCPS has announced its recommended amendments to its CIP, which includes the delay of the proposed expansion of BE for two years pushing the opening of the expansion from the start of the 2023-2024 school year to the 2025-2026 school year.

What does this mean to the B.E. community? BE is currently at 670 students, which is +100 over its current capacity. If the average growth rate of approx. 30 students per year continues, BE would be +250 over capacity before the new expansion would come online. This growth rate is not unreasonable given the ongoing development that will be continuing during this period. The options for re-configuring the existing space and the use of portables will not be able to fully address this overcrowding.

What can you do? 1. You can attend the Board of Education hearing on Thursday, March 5 at 6pm to show your support for moving the expansion back to its original timeline. Click here for more details about the meeting.

Order Yearbooks Now!

The BE Yearbook is now on sale through March 30th 2020 with early bird pricing ($22/book)

From March 30th to May 1st it will cost $25/yearbook.  The yearbooks will be distributed in June during the last week of school.  

How do I purchase a BE 2019 - 2020 Yearbook? Online! We are only taking online orders through Freed Photography.  After you purchase, you will get an email receipt.  Please keep your receipt or make yourself a note so you know whether you bought a book.  It is difficult to later look up whether you already purchased one.  We are happy to help with ordering if anyone needs it!  

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Unlike prior years, we will NOT be selling any yearbooks after May 1st -- you must buy a book before then if you want one--there will not be any extras for sale after that date.

School Board Announces Calendar for 2020-21

On December 3, the BoE voted on the adoption of the calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. The first day of school will be on Monday, August 31, 2020 and end on Wednesday, June 16, 2021.

BEPTA List serve change

BEPTA has decided to move BEPTANET from Yahoo Groups to Google Groups. If you are joining the listserve for the first time, click here for instructions 

 

Here's what you need to know:

 

1) If you were on the Yahoo Group, you will be added to the new Google Group automatically and you will receive a welcome message.

 

2) To post an email to the BE community, use the address beptanet@googlegroups.com.

 

We expect this transition to be pretty seamless and hope that the new platform will provide a much more stable method for serving the BE community!

Box Top Collection

We are bringing back our Box Top Collection Program!! Please send in clipped box tops with the "Box Tops 4 Education" seal on them in a Ziploc bag. Teachers will collect the bags from your child. You are also welcome to drop them off directly at the school - there is a box in the front main office which is labeled with "Drop your box tops here."

In addition, note that the Box Tops for Education program is switching to an app-based receipt scanning system. The school will be making the switch next year, but if you prefer you can use this format now. If you purchase products with a Box Top, you may scan your store receipt to earn funds for BE. To start earning money for BE with Box Tops App:

1. Download the Box Tops App and create an account or log in using Facebook or Google

2. Select Bethesda Elementary as your school

3. Scan your receipt when you buy items with the BoxTops$ for Education seal and the app will automatically credit BE for your purchases.

Register Grocery Cards and Earn Money for Our School

A portion of your purchase can be given back to support PTA program when you register your Harris Teeter rewards card. Last year, we had 89 participants and earned over $1200, so taking a few minutes to link your card makes a big difference--thank you to everyone who participated!! It costs nothing, and it’s a quick and easy way to raise money for the school. Registering your cards DOES NOT affect your personal rewards or discounts, and does not require you to do anything other than shop as usual. BACK TO SCHOOL UPDATE:

The Harris Teeter "Together in Education" program started August 1st which begins earning money for BE when we use our linked VIC reward cards.  But, we have to re-link our VIC card to Bethesda Elementary each August.  

Giant ended their A+ for Schools Rewards program this year. 

School Store Open on Fridays 8:20-9:00am

The store offers school supplies, seasonal treasures and other fun, little goodies. Most items are priced between .25 and $3.00.  If your child would like to do some early morning shopping, please send him or her to school with a small amount of money to spend.

 

The School Store will be open one Friday a month TBD throughout the school year. It is run by 4th grade students and their parents and provides an opportunity for the children to develop their business skills while raising money for the school.
